Sligo’s Old Cemetery

Sligo’s Victorian-era cemetery is picturesquely situated on the slopes of the historic Cairns Hill, almost a mile from the town centre, with extensive views over Ben Bulben. It has frequently been noted for the beauty of its setting, still undiminished today, 170 years after its opening. A walk around this cemetery is a lesson in the history of politics, business and social life of Sligo Borough.

We were delighted to secure this funding from The Heritage Council supported by Sligo County Council, with matched funding from the property owners. This will continue the good work last year on the southern end of OConnell St and will allow work to commence on the northern half of OConnell St.

This project will involve private owners working with Sligo County Council to undertake the heritage-led regeneration of O'Connell Street (an Architectural Conservation Area) in Sligo town through streetscape conservation and enhancements. €200,000.
