Joe Carroll
4 Pearse Rd, Sligo, F91 D58W
Joe Carroll was a well-known figure in Sligo and is depicted in this mural. Nicknamed Straightback, something he didn’t approve of, he could often be spotted on the streets in his navy trench coat and cap, along with his black bicycle. Joe was occasionally mistaken for a traffic warden or Garda, as he often took it upon himself to direct the town’s traffic. He died in 2005 and about a decade later in 2015 funds were raised by the local community to erect a headstone on his grave. A ceremony was held at his gravesite, and saw the unavailing of the headstone, made possible by the generosity of the people of Sligo.
