Easter Rising

This Mural, depicting the Easter Rising, shows the Irish Republican Brotherhood’s 7-man council, along with Countess Georgine Markievicz. The 1916 Easter Rising was an attempt to cause a revolution in Ireland. It was ultimately a failure, but the execution of the revolutionary leaders caused outrage amongst the Irish people.

This anger would continue to grow, resulting in the War of Independence. Countess Markievicz, who was born in Lissadell, Sligo, was amongst the revolutionary leaders and took part in the Rising. In 1918 Markievicz became the first woman to be elected to The House of Commons in Westminster. Then, after the formation of the first Dáil Eireann, she was appointed Labour Minister, becoming the first female cabinet minister in a modern democracy.
