When creating this mural, The Owl of Wisdom, the intention was to create something colourful, innovative, and engaging, and that would display ATU as a place where people seek education and knowledge. In Greek mythology, animals were often associated with the qualities of Gods or Goddesses, and the Owl would become one of the most important religious symbols. The Owl was particularly revered in Athens, the Goddess’s patron city, and many objects such as vases would show the symbol of the Owl.
When the Roman Empire conquered Greece, much of the Greek religion was adopted by the Romans. The Goddess Minerva, the Roman equivalent to Athena, also became associated with the owl. You may have heard the expression “Wise as an Owl”, which shows that the quality of wisdom is still associated with Owls today. This mural, and the metal statue of the Salmon of Knowledge, are both part of a walk around the ATU Sligo’s campus called the Path of Knowledge. Many students also pose in front of the Mural on their graduation day, to create the impression that they are being lifted up by the Owl of Wisdom.
