Queen Maeve Mural (Railway Bridge)

Knappagh Road, Sligo

This mural is dedicated to the Celtic Queen Maeve, a warrior queen, who was said to be the daughter of the high king of Ireland. Historians do not agree as to whether Queen Maeve actually existed or not, but she has played a large role in Irish folklore and legends. After being placed on the throne of Connaught by her father, her marriage was said to have been arranged to Ulster’s King Conchobar.

The marriage ultimately broke down and led to fierce rivalry and conflicts between them. Legend says that Maeve was buried in the large cairn at the top of Knocknarea, and is buried upright in full armor, facing her enemies in Ulster.
