Sligo will be Europe’s designated Volunteering Capital for 2017.
The announcement was made on Friday in Lisbon (European Volunteering Capital 2015) by the Centre for European Volunteering.
Belfast, Bruges and Cagliari (Italy) were among the cities also vying for the 2017 accolade.
London has been named as European Volunteering Capital for 2016.
The designation is made each year to the city/municipality of any size which best demonstrates the Policy Agenda for Volunteering in Europe (PAVE).
Sligo’s strong volunteer ethic in recent years across a wide range of community and local authority organisations was a key factor in its selection.
